AN URBAN HOSPITAL
The new critical care facility at Toulouse Hospital was designed to be connected seamlessly to the adjacent Pierre Paul Riquet Clinic.
A pivotal point the entrance to the hospital campus, it is a place for human interaction, bathed in light, like a beacon within the city.
In accordance with the Purpan campus design charter, the façades of the lower three floors are clad in terracotta tiles, the aim being to re-appropriate the traditional building materials used in Toulouse, popularly known as “the pink city”. Here, however, terracotta is used in a contemporary way, with metal inserts on the façades avoiding the monotony of a flat expanse of colour.
Similarly, the sunshades protecting the glazed façades on the upper levels create a random rhythm that breaks up the impression of linearity.
THE BAYLAC TERRACE - A LANDSCAPED PROMENADE
It is a garden hospital, with different departments arranged around a system of pathways punctuated by pleasant, reassuring waiting areas in harmony with nature.
Small squares and planted patios bring life to the rear of the building.
The building welcomes users as soon as they step off the tram and guides them to the heart of the facility, with a clearly identifiable public lift on the front façade connecting the upper and lower levels of this section of the Purpan campus.
